Forest Hills area nursing home Fairview Nursing Care Center supports March National Nutrition Month
Forest Hills, NY (March 2014) March is National Nutrition Month, an observance that is widely overlooked, yet universally important to every member of our society. As people age, nutrition becomes more important to overall health, especially in regards to the elderly population. Proper diet and nutrition helps elderly individuals keep their minds sharp and alert, while also increasing energy. However, the elderly have different needs than the rest of the population, which is why Fairview Nursing Care Center of Forest Hills, New York, would like to share helpful tips about maintaining a healthy diet after the age of 50.
Use less salt! Reduce your sodium intake to reduce water retention and high blood pressure.Eat good fats! Avocados, olive oil, walnuts, and salmon are all examples of “good fats” that can protect you from bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol.
Go fiber! Fiber is a crucial part of a nutritional diet, as itreduces constipation, lowers your risk of chronic disease, and helps you feel more full when eating.Eat more veggies! The best way to prepare vegetables is bysteaming or sautéing them in olive oil. Olive oil preserves nutrients and is a great example of the good fats doctors recommend.
Diversify your plate! A helpful tip from Japanese food culture is to include five colors on your plate. Fruits and veggies rich in color correspond to rich nutrients (blackberries, melons, yams, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini).
“Our dietary department is a crucial aspect of our operations here at Fairview Nursing Care Center and we take great pride in the food we make here. We understand that many health issues our residents encounter can potentially be avoided with the right diet. Our dietary department is superb, and works with every resident individually to create personalized nutrition plans. This being Nutrition Month, we salute the work they do and thank them for it,” Asher Frankel, Administrator at Fairview Nursing Care Center.

Fairview Nursing Care Center Supports January
Blood Donor Month and Urges the Public to Help Donate
Forest Hills, NY based nursing home recognizes and encourages community members to donate blood during Blood Donor Month
Queens, NY (January 2014) Every year, millions of people donate blood to help others in times of emergency, often for various reasons. Some donate for a relative or a friend in need, others just for the satisfaction of helping another. The month of January, designated as Blood Donor Month, is particularly important for donations due to the frequency of winter weather accidents and injuries.
An estimated 41,000 blood donations are needed every day and while that goal may not be reached, there are enough people eligible to donate to fill it. This is why Fairview Nursing Care Center encourages members of the community to participate in blood drives this month. The Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage, a dangerous situation to be in when someone in the US is in need of blood every two seconds.
When deciding to give blood, one should follow these simple steps for the best donation experience. First, when giving blood, it is possible to become dizzy from a drop in blood sugar. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice the night and morning before a donation and avoid dehydrating caffeinated beverages. Having food in your stomach also helps decrease light headedness, so it is advised to eat three hours before donation. During your donation, remember to relax. Bring a calming playlist or a book, something that only requires one hand to use. Finally, after your donation, be sure to have a meal high in protein to help your body replenish your blood supply. Remember to steer clear of alcoholic beverages for at least 8 hours post donation.
“Blood donation is an extremely important civic duty. It is something that takes up just a few moments of your time but can literally be a lifesaver to someone in need. Having a low blood supply is a national emergency, and we all must do our part to help solve this issue,” remarked Asher Frankel, Administrator at Fairview Nursing Care Center.

Forest Hills based Nursing Home educates the community on the dangers of the Meningitis disease and how to prevent infection.
Forest Hills, NY (April 2014) This year, April 24th marks World Meningitis Day. Started by the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations, World Meningitis Day aims to raise the global profile of meningitis, emphasize the importance of vaccination, and provide support to those dealing with the symptoms of the disease. Fairview Nursing Care Center recognizes the importance of educating the community on the disease and supports the CoMO in their efforts by sharing tips to avoid contracting the disease and how to respond in the worst case scenario.
Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges. The meninges is the collective name for the three membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord. There are three types of meningitis: Bacterial, Viral, and Fungal. Bacterial meningitis is aggressive, develops quickly and can lead to permanent disability or death in a matter of hours. It is fatal in approximately 50% of cases and accounts for around 170,000 deaths around the world each year. The infection spreads from person to person through actions such as kissing, coughing, sneezing, sharing food or utensils. Children who attend daycare or preschool are at greater risk of contracting bacterial meningitis.
Viral meningitis is the most common but least severe and many patients recover without any permanent damage. Fungal meningitis causes severe infections but occurs much less frequently. It is not contagious and spreads by inhaling fungal spores from the environment.
Meningitis can be difficult to identify early on in infection. The main signs of contracting the disease are similar to the common cold and develop quickly over the course of just a few hours. Look for symptoms such as vomiting, drowsiness, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and headache as well as altered consciousness. The best way to prevent bacterial meningitis is through vaccination. Vaccines prepare the immune system by exposing the body to a germ so that it is better able to fight an infection when it occurs. The vaccines available protect against all three major causes of bacterial meningitis.
“Meningitis is a dangerous and fatal disease. People should be educated on its potential dangers and learn how to prevent infection, not just for their health, but for the health of future generations. Since the geriatric population is at high risk, we must do our best as a care center to spread awareness, not germs," said Asher Frankel, Administrator at Fairview Nursing Care Center.
